A civil servant in Vavuniya said Monday there will be no restrictions on displaced persons from Tuesday. They have to inform the army post they are leaving and can come and go as they wish. He said resettlement work was on schedule as authorities step up mine clearing work in the former combat zone.

The government, which faces elections in January, has in the past month stepped up the formal process of returning people to the villages and the numbers living in the camps have halved.

Nearly 128,000 men, women and children who were displaced during the final stages of the conflict till now lived in camps in Vavuniya district, 173 miles (260 kms) north of Colombo.
