Laptops for students in rural areas

The Education Ministry has taken steps to distribute laptops to students from Grade 1 to 5 from next month, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said according to the Government Information Department.

The Minister pointed out that the proposed project would be introduced parallel with other programmes in keeping with the President's declaration of the year 2009 as the year of  Information Technology and English language.

The first phase of this programme   will cover 1,500 children from 13 selected rural schools.They will receive a laptop each and the scheme will be inaugurated on December 10, the Minister said. It is the Government's aim to provide computer knowledge among students in the North and East. Under the President's concept, 37 schools in the North have already been provided with computer laboratories, the Minister added.
