Environmental Authority to fine roadside garbage dumpers

The Central Environmental Authority (CEA) is in the process of drawing up plans to fine those who litter garbage along the roadside in order to curb health hazards and other inconveniences caused to the public as a result of people dumping garbage along key roads, Chairman of the CEA Professor W. Abeyewikrema told.

The new regulation will be gazetted and brought into force at the beginning of next year after a proper garbage collection system and other measures are put in place. There are suggestions to impose a fine of up to Rs. 15,000 from those who dump garbage. The authorities will identify these road side dumping areas and take necessary steps, Professor Abeyewikrema told
