Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has conveyed a message to Pakistani Prime minister Yousef Raza Gilani that a team of doctors would be sent to Pakistan to help care for the displaced who are reported to be facing severe health problems after nearly a week of extremely heavy monsoon rains that triggered raging floods in Khyber-Pakhtoonkhwa province.

Sri Lanka was willing to assist Pakistan in its hour of need as it had always stood by the island nation during good time and bad. As a gesture of goodwill a stock of Sri Lankan tea too is to be sent to the flood affected, states the President’s Media Unit.

Pakistan medical teams fear that cholera could spread after the worst floods in the country’s history that already have killed up to 1,200 people, states agency reports.

The disaster has forced up to 2 million to flee their homes. Residents have railed against the government for failing to provide enough emergency assistance.

The government said it has deployed thousands of rescue workers who so far have saved an estimated 28,000 people and distributed basic food items. The army also has sent some 30,000 troops and dozens of helicopters, but the scale of the disaster is vast. Thousands more people in the province remain trapped by the floodwaters.
