Govt. given time to resolve wage crisis
The decision made by university lecturers to refrain from administrative duties from tomorrow (August 30) if their salary demands are not met has been postponed till 07 September. The Federation of University Teachers’ Association (FUTA) stated that this was decided after the government had called for more time to resolve the issue.
The Assistant Secretariat of FUTA, Dr. Nirmal Ranjith Devasiri emphasized that in previous discussions Lalith Weeratunga, the Secretary to the President had assured that a practical solution would be given regarding the wage hike by August 25.
But when the no solution was put forward on the said date the President’s Secretary was informed on the matter by FUTA in writing and Lalith Weeratunga had replied pleading for 7 more days to resolve the issue.
Dr. Devasiri said that a decision was then made to postpone the abstaining of administrative duties until the 7th of September. He further added that on September 02 University lecturers around the country will take part in a protest to show the government the Federation of University Teachers Association’s strength.
